Juha Pisto (b. 1966) began formal music studies as a student musician in the Bothnian Military Band. He studied tuba at the Oulu Conservatoire receiving a low brass teacher’s diploma. The following year he finished post-diploma studies at the same school. While pursuing his tuba diploma, Mr. Pisto studied music theory and composition with Mr. Vesa Valkama as well as conducting with Ari Angervo (Oulu Conservatoire) and Atso Almila (Sibelius Academy).
Wind music is strongly represented among his works. He has composed music for the Lieksa Brass Week and other finnish wind music festivals. His has been commissioned to write pieces for orchestras throughout Finland including the Guard’s Band of Finland, the Bothnian Military Band, the City Orchestra of Kemi (Kemi City Orchestra) and the Oulu Symphony. His works also include four concertos (concerto for orchestra, recorder-, clarinet- and harp concerto), music for symphony orchestra and chamber music for vocal and instrumental ensembles of various combinations. Outside his native country Finland, Pisto’s music has been performed in United States, Sweden, Norway, Danmark, Germany, Austria and Lithuania.
Pisto has taught low brass, chamber music, music theory/composing/improvising in the many music institutes in Finland. In addition to this he has also taught orchestral conducting and instrumentation. He also conducts orchestras and working freelance tuba player.
